• Zamzam water is water from the greatest well.
• As taught from forefathers, Zamzam water is the best of nourishments.

• Separated from the Ka’abah by only 21 meters. At only 31 meters deep.
• Catered to by two springs from which the pure water gushes forth.

Pumping Zamzam Water:

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

The first woman to ever wear a waist-wrapper (mintaq) was the mother of Isma’il (peace be upon him). She fashioned it for herself in order to conceal her tracks from Sarah (Ibrahim’s wife).

Then Ibrahim (peace be upon him) brought her and her infant son Isma’il, whom she was nursing, and left them near the Sacred House—beside a tree above the area of Zamzam, at the highest part of the mosque. At that time, there was no one in Makkah, and no water.

He left with them a small bag of dates and a skin container of water. Then Ibrahim turned and began walking away.

Isma’il’s mother followed him and called out, “O Ibrahim! Where are you going? Are you going to leave us in this valley, where there is no one and nothing?” She repeated it several times, but he did not look back.

Finally, she asked, “Has Allah commanded you to do this?”
He replied, “Yes.”
She said, “Then He will not abandon us.”

She returned to her place, and Ibrahim continued on. When he reached a mountain pass where they could no longer see him, he turned to face the Ka‘bah, raised his hands, and made du‘a:

“My Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a barren valley near Your Sacred House…so that they may establish prayer… (until he reached) …so that they may be grateful.” [Qur’an 14:37]

The mother of Isma’il continued nursing him and drinking from the water until it ran out. Her child became thirsty, and so did she. She watched him writhing in pain—or the narrator said: thrashing in agony.

Unable to bear the sight, she turned away and climbed the hill of Safa, the closest elevation in the area. She stood upon it, looking into the valley to see if anyone was around, but she saw no one.

She descended from Safa and, upon reaching the valley floor, lifted the hem of her dress and began to run like a person in distress, until she crossed the valley and reached Marwah. She climbed it and looked, but again saw no one.

She repeated this journey seven times.

Ibn Abbas said:
The Prophet ﷺ said, “That is why the people perform Sa‘i (walking) between Safa and Marwah.”

When she reached Marwah on the seventh time, she heard a sound. She said to herself, “Hush,” trying to quiet herself to hear more clearly. She listened again and heard it once more. She said, “You have made me hear you—if you can help, then do so!”

And there she saw an angel at the location of Zamzam…

…Digging into the earth—either with his heel or with his wing—until the water appeared.

She began to contain the water around it, cupping it with her hands like this (the narrator gestured with his hand), and she filled her waterskin. The water kept gushing even as she scooped.

Ibn Abbas said:
The Prophet ﷺ said,
“May Allah have mercy on the mother of Isma’il! Had she left the water as it was—or had she not scooped it up—Zamzam would have been a flowing spring (a river above the ground).”

She drank from the water and nursed her child.

Then the angel said to her:
“Do not be afraid of being forsaken, for this is the site of Allah’s House, which this boy and his father will build. And Allah does not abandon His people.”

At that time, the House (Ka‘bah) was just a small mound—elevated above the ground like a hillock—and when floods came, the water would flow around it from the right and the left.

She remained there, and then a group from the tribe of Jurhum (or a family from Jurhum) passed by, coming from the direction of Kada’. They had settled in the lower part of Makkah and saw birds circling above.

They said, “This bird must be circling around water, yet we know this valley has never had any water.”

So they sent scouts, and to their surprise, they found the water. They returned and informed the group, who came rushing.

Isma’il’s mother was near the water. They asked her, “May we settle near you?”

She replied, “Yes, but you will have no right to the water.”
