Let’s leave the winter woes of the UK for just a moment. And wander into semi-Mediterranean, costal Atlantic zones. Cultivated in Morocco’s south-western, sun-bathed valleys does thrive the Argania spinosa (aka – Sideroxylon spinosum). A remarkable tree – ubiquitous in a land shaped by extremes. Indigenous to valleys, foothills… And even semi-arid plains… Often protected from the harsh Saharan winds by the formidable Anti-Atlas mountain range. Giving way for temperatures to soar to 35°C (95°F) or more. In a moisture laden atmosphere of 55 – 65% humidity. Manifesting in soft, yet slightly heavy air. Kissed by an Atlantic oceanic breeze. But only in some seasons. Yet rain is rare. With only 150 to 400 millimeters approximately pouring every year. See, these are the conditions… The climate if you will. That contributes to an endemic in the presence of golden argan tree drupes. A small, leathery-skinned, oval shaped, sweet-nutty, natural fruit. Blossoming in argan groves. Exuding earthy aromas, firm to touch – yet slightly springy. When extracted becoming silky. This is argan oil. Also known as liquid gold. An emerging ingredient in many cosmeceutical products that are sold!

And What is Dandruff?

The Science behind the Itching!

So, if you didn’t already know… And you really want to. Dandruff is a common scalp condition that really seems to bug you. Causing yellowish or white flakes. Along with itching. And irritation. Sometimes seasonal. Arriving in UK winter months. Especially, when coupled with precipitation.

UK Common Causes of Dandruff & the Things You Do to Support it!

#1. That Sinisterly Ashy Dry Scalp:

Dry scalps are actually quite common, especially in colder climates. And obviously you don’t control the weather! With flakiness taking over scalps outside summer months in the UK. Which many would complain is really almost never. “Same old England… You know the line…”

#2. Malassezia:

And no! It’s not some exotic get-away island in the Caribbean. Nor anywhere near to Malaysia. Pronounced, Mala-say-ze-ya. A naturally occurring fungus that irritates your scalp and can speed up your skin-cell turnover. Which basically refers to the rate in which your new skin cells are produced in the basal layer of your skins epidermis… Eventually shedding off after migrating to your skins surface.

#3. Seborrheic Dermatitis:

So, as you can easily guess… This is an illness of some kind affecting the skin. Especially, if you’ve ever heard the word dermatologist. Pronounced, Sebo-ree-ic Der-ma-ti-tis. So, easy to pronounce! But a little harsh on your scalp. A more intense form of dandruff. Presenting redness, yellowish flakes & grease. Often affecting Brits with naturally oilier skin. Or even some certain skin conditions. Like eczema or psoriasis.

#4. Hard Water:

And no. This is not a reference to water that can mug you… Rather, we are talking about a specific water type that contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals. Primarily calcium & magnesium. Especially prevalent in areas like Kent, Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk and Greater London,. Although, generally not considered harmful to health… Hard water can lead to limescale buildup in appliances. And even higher energy bills. But as for your hair, then beware… Hard water can irritate your scalp, increasing its flakiness. All while reducing its natural moisture and leaving unwanted residue.

#5. Infrequent Hair Washing:

Not trying to cramp your style. Nor giving any tips on your personal hygiene health. But you may need to re-consider over-looking your hair, the next time you shower yourself. See, infrequent washing can cause build-up of oils & dead skin. Which coupled with cold UK wintery weather, can increase your scalp’s flaking.

So, now that we’ve delved into some of the environmental factors, prevalent in the UK. As well as some habits that we may have adopted. Especially in the winter months. All contributing to unwanted dandruff. Now that we’ve explored this… We can really keep calm and argan on, as we answer is argan oil good for dandruff?

Can Argan Oil Really Alleviate Dandruff?

Academic Research:

So, researchers have found the following properties and/or benefits of argan oil on dandruff:

  • Firstly, argan oil is sebostatic! Meaning it has a regulatory effect on sebum secretion. Purportedly due to its high oleic acid (omega-9 fatty acid) content.
    • So, by balancing sebum production… Argan oil deprives Malassezia of excess oils. Reduces yeast multiplication. And even tones down inflammation. All while crucially normalizing the rate in which your skin cells are shed. Thus, reducing flaking.
  • Secondly, argan oil is an emollient! Meaning moisturizing the skin & hair by way of its exceptional capacity for holding water. Thus, creating an impactful moisturizing effect on your skin and scalp. And this beneficial property is said to be a result of argan oil’s rich linoleic acid, oleic acid, vitamin E and squalene content.
    • Which together, reinforce your scalp’s lipid barrier.
    • Reduces trans-epidermal water loss (aka. TWEL, the natural, continuous evaporation of water from your skin’s surface. Which can cause dryness on your scalp).
    • Resulting in a better hydrated, calmer scalp. With reduced dryness-related flakes.

So, now you can remember argan oil is emollient. Meaning moisturizing. Keeping your hair soft & tender. Whilst also being sebostatic. So, positively balancing your scalps sebum content.

Argan Oil’s Key Components

So, as we’ve established argan oil is good for treating dandruff… Especially, for when UK wintery weather seems to amplify its detriment. So, let’s now explore the underlying components, nutrients and vitamins that promote argan oil’s powerful effect.

#1. Vitamin E:

Firstly… Vitamin E. A quiet powerhouse. Also, a natural antioxidant. Working behind the scenes. It helps steady your skin’s barrier, supporting the lipids that keep irritation out and moisture in. With its calming touch… Vitamin E can also abate inflammation. Thus, easing that familiar itching of an unsettled scalp. Not a cure-all, but a steady ally. Helping the skin hold water, settle, breathe. And in doing so, gently reducing dryness. Soothing irritation. And easing that overwhelming flaking sensation. All-in-all, vitamin E… Although a small molecule, it can provide a subtle shift… Thus, leading to a noticeable relief.

#2. Oleic and Linoleic Acids:

Secondly… And when it comes to dandruff, it’s double trouble… When argan oil’s oleic and linoleic acids are about. Both are respective omega fatty-acids, playing a key role in soothing your scalp. So, oleic acid helps regulate sebum production… That sebostatic effect, aforementioned… Whilst linoleic acid supports your skin-barrier lipids. Also known as ceramides… Reinforcing your scalps barrier. And assisting its moisture retention.

#3. Squalene:

Thirdly, squalene… A seemingly lesser important component of argan oil. But its presence contributes to your skin-lipid stability. With academic research suggesting that when maintained at a good level… Squalene can prevent your scalp flaking. Thus, playing its part in the art of argan oil being considered anti-inflammatory.

#4. Polyphenols:

And also… Polyphenols. Like ferulic acid, syringic acid and tyrosol… Considered powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Helping reduce oxidative stress, abating your scalp’s irritation. And promoting your skin’s natural immune balance.

So, now that we’ve delved into how science answers the question… Is argan oil good for dandruff… We’ve decided to start our own little in-house experiment. Including, you… Our loyal patrons in order to decipher… Whether our esteemed customer experiences correlate with scientific data.
